A Brief Word About Pure Word Ministries

Pure Word Ministries began in February 1987 out of an answer to prayer and a desire to have a meeting focused on Jesus Christ and to acknowledge His ability to set individuals free from bondage to sin and fear. Originally called New Wine Ministries, its focus was limited to alcohol and narcotics. As the ministry grew, our vision and scope grew also, and the name was changed to Pure Word Ministries in 1993. God's Word, the Bible, tells us that it is sufficient for all areas of life and that it will equip us thoroughly for all areas of ministry (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Because of this, we now offer assistance for not only alcohol and drug issues but also for other addictive behaviors as well. Jesus came to set people free (John 8:36), and the focus of this ministry is to see the people set free from the issues that hold them in bondage to sin (Romans 8:37; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5). The meeting format consists of sharing from a Christ-centered perspective. We use a teaching model which offers an effective approach in keeping the group focused on the issues at hand and the supremacy of Jesus Christ in our lives (2 Corinthians 3:5).

We don't focus on the past and what we were like but rather on what our Lord is doing presently in our lives (Hebrews 12:1; Philippians 3:13). Focusing on the past causes us to boast in things that were and are unprofitable (Romans 12:2; 2 Timothy 2:16; Philippians 4:8; 2 Corinthians 10:13,18) and also causes us to compare ourselves with each other (2 Corinthians 4:5; 10:12). This differs from the Alcoholics Anonymous approach where one individual opens up with a topic and the others expound on this topic from their own understanding or experience (Proverbs 3:5-6, 28:26; Jeremiah 10:23). The Bible tells us not to trust in ourselves or own understanding or experience. Each person is encouraged to interact actively through questions and rebuttals to all comments and to compare these with the Word of God.

With this type of format we accomplish several goals:

  1. The group stays focused on the present and future rather than glorifying the past and the sinful nature, a.k.a. "war stories" (Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 4:22-24).
  2. The group keeps focused on Jesus and others rather than on self (Matthew 20:26-27).
  3. The group learns that through prayer and worship, confession and repentance, and discipleship and accountability, their walk of faith will be enhanced as their hearts and minds are transformed, renewed, and regenerated in Jesus Christ.
  4. The individual learns that accountability is an asset rather than a burden as they learn to disciple and be discipled.

Some have misconstrued our vision, methods, and intent because of our Christ-centered format, but with these principles, we live out the reality that it is God's grace and mercy that has truly restored our lives. We have found great success in keeping this consistent format. All who have attended have found an integrity and security that they could trust. Jesus remains the same (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8). Though some may fall back into sinful behaviors, when they return, they see the love of Christ displayed in the format and people in the same consistent manner. The richness of God's Word is the key to keeping the freshness and vibrancy of our meetings. Prayer is the essential ingredient to keep us together individually and as a group.

All are welcome to attend Pure Word meetings as long as they agree to hold in strict confidence all that is shared. All that is needed is a Bible, a pen, and paper to write down scriptures and notes. Our prayer is that this gives you an insight into Pure Word Ministries and answers some of the questions you might have.
